10s and 1s on a number line수직선에서 10과 1로 읽기

Find the nearest 10 first. Then count on or back in 1s.

Every number lives between two 10s. 47 is between 40 and 50. It is 7 more than 40 and 3 less than 50, so it is closer to 50.

To find a number, go to the nearest 10 first. Then count on (or back) in 1s. Do not start from 0.

Some lines are short, like 40 to 50. Read the first number first. A number line does not always start at 0.

Between two 10s

DOBuild 47: 4 towers of 10 and 7 single bricks.
YOU“Which two 10s is 47 between?”
LIA40 and 50.
YOU“Is it closer to 40 or to 50?”
LIA50. Only 3 more bricks make another 10.

Start at the nearest 10

DOPoint to 80 on the paper line.
YOU“Find 82. Do we start from 0?”
LIANo. Start at 80. 81, 82.
YOU“Now find 89. Which 10 is closer, 80 or 90?”
LIA90. Count back 1: 89.

Counting from the nearest 10 is fast. Counting from 0 is slow and easy to get wrong.

A short line

DODraw a short line. Write 40 at the start and 50 at the end. Draw 9 small marks in between.
DODraw an arrow above the sixth mark.
YOU“What number is the arrow pointing to?”
LIA6?
YOU“Look at the start of the line. What number is it?”
LIA40. Oh, so it is 46!

Ask Lia to read the first number out loud before she counts. Do this on every short line.

Put it on the line

YOU“Draw an arrow to show where 74 goes.”
LIAIt is between 70 and 80. Start at 70: 71, 72, 73, 74. Here.
YOU“Is 74 closer to 70 or to 80?”
LIACloser to 70.

  • “Did you start from 0? Is there a quicker way?”

    Good answers

“I started at 80 because it was the nearest 10.”

  • “What number does this line start at?”

    Note

Ask it before every short line.

  • When

Lia counts every mark from 0, one by one.

Cover the start of the line with your hand. “Find the nearest 10 first. Then count on in 1s.”

  • When

On a line from 40 to 50, she reads the arrow as “6”.

“Read the first number first. What is it?” Then count on together from 40: 41, 42 … 46.

  • When

She puts 89 just after 80.

“Is 89 closer to 80 or to 90?” Show it with bricks: 89 needs only 1 more to make 90.

Game · Big step, small steps

You need: the floor number line from Part 1

  1. Call a number, like 53. Lia jumps to the nearest 10 first (50). Then she takes small steps: 51, 52, 53.
  2. Before she moves, she says which 10 is closer: “53 is closer to 50.”
  3. Swap. Lia calls a number for you. Make a mistake on purpose. Can she catch it?
In the workbook

Short lines in 1s to fill in, arrows to read on longer lines, and two numbers to place exactly.

자주 묻는 질문

40–50 수직선의 화살표를 “6”이라고 읽어요.

선이 0이 아니라 40에서 시작한다는 걸 놓친 거예요. “Read the first number first.”라고 말하고 40부터 41, 42 … 46으로 함께 세어 보세요.
