About this booklet
This booklet was made by Lia's dad, with the help of AI, to help Lia get ready for the Year 2 Addition and Subtraction unit.
It follows the first six small steps of the White Rose Maths Year 2 scheme (Autumn Block 2), which the school uses. The maths is at Year 2 level.
Why the focus on words?
Lia is confident with numbers. The harder part is the English used in maths: words like altogether, left, fewer and difference.
So every page teaches key words, and many questions are short stories. Your child learns to find the maths word first, then choose + or −.
Plan · about 15–20 minutes a day
| Order | Pages | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| Before Part 1 | My Maths Words · More Maths Words · Word Detective | Maths words · Word Detective — Read the word pages together. Say each word out loud. |
| Part 1 | Bonds to 10 | Bonds to 10 — Two numbers that make 10 (7 + 3, 6 + 4 …). |
| Part 2 | Fact families | Fact families — 3 numbers → 4 facts: 9 + 4 = 13, 4 + 9 = 13, 13 − 4 = 9, 13 − 9 = 4. |
| Part 3 | Related facts | Related facts — 3 + 4 = 7, so 30 + 40 = 70 (3 tens + 4 tens = 7 tens). |
| Part 4 | Bonds to 100 | Bonds to 100 — 4 + 6 = 10, so 40 + 60 = 100. |
| Part 5 | Add and subtract 1s | Add and subtract 1s — 34 + 3 = 37. Only the ones digit changes. |
| Last | Challenge · Story Problems · How did I do? | Challenge · Story problems · Self-check — 8 + 5 = 8 + 2 + 3 = 13. Mixed word problems. “How did I do?” |

Good questions to ask
- “How many more do you need to make 10?”
- “How do you know?”
- “What do you notice?”
- “Can you find another way?”
- “Is it true or false? Why?”
- “Can you say it as a number sentence?”
Answers are at the end of the workbook. Please note: this is home practice, not official school or White Rose material. If something is taught differently in class, please follow the teacher's method.
How to help at home
- Read first, then solve.
Read the question aloud together. Then let your child read it again.
- Find the maths word.
Ask: “Which word tells you to add or take away?” before any calculating.
- Use real objects.
Coins, blocks or pasta help. Schools teach with objects → pictures → numbers.
- Ask them to explain.
Use the Say it! boxes and the Maths Talk page. Explaining is part of Year 2 maths.
- Point, don't tell.
If an answer is wrong, point to the key word or the picture, and let your child try again.
- Stop while it's fun.
Short and happy is better than long. One part's pages are enough.
The pictures we use
These are the same kinds of models used in White Rose lessons. Your child will see them in class too.
Practise on a tablet
There is also a small web page, Lia's Maths Words. It has word cards that read each word aloud, a quick + or − quiz, and story problems. It works well for 5 minutes a day.
