About this booklet
This booklet was made by Lia's dad, with the help of AI, to help Lia with the Year 2 Place Value unit.
It follows the order of small steps 12–14 of the White Rose Maths Year 2 Place Value unit (Autumn Block 1): compare objects, compare numbers, and order objects and numbers.
Why the focus on words?
Most children can see which number is bigger. The harder part is the English: greater than, less than, equal to, ascending, descending, and the signs < and >.
So every page asks your child to say the comparison as a full sentence: “54 is greater than 45.”
Plan · about 15–20 minutes a day
| Order | Pages | Topic |
|---|---|---|
| Part 1 | Compare objects | Compare objects — Two groups of tens and ones. The greater number has more tens. |
| Part 2 | Compare numbers | Compare numbers — Tens first, then ones. < > = and the number line. |
| Part 3 | Tens, ones and sums | Tens, ones and sums — Change 2 tens into 20 and work out 60 + 4 before you compare. |
| Part 4 | Find all the answers | Find all the answers — 53 < □ < 57 has 3 answers. True or false with base 10. |
| Part 5 | Order numbers | Order numbers — Write the numbers smallest first (ascending). The Look box also shows greatest first (descending). |

Good questions to ask
- “How do you know?”
- “Which place did you look at first?”
- “Can you say it the other way round?”
- “Is there more than one answer?”
- “How do you know you have found them all?”
- “Is it true or false? Why?”
Answers are at the end of the workbook. Please note: this is home practice, not official school or White Rose material. If something is taught differently in class, please follow the teacher's method.
How to help at home
- Build it first.
Lego towers of 10 and single bricks work well as tens and ones.
- Tens first.
Ask: “How many tens? Which has more tens?” before anything else.
- Read the sign aloud.
After Lia writes < or >, ask her to read the whole sentence. A wrong sign sounds wrong.
- Say it both ways.
“54 is greater than 45” and “45 is less than 54” are the same fact.
- Look for more answers.
When a box has many answers, praise the first one, then ask for another.
- Stop while it's fun.
Short and happy is better than long. One Part a day is enough.
The pictures we use
These are the same kinds of models used in class. Your child will see them at school too.
