Counting · Number words · Facts within 20 · goes with “Lia's Maths Book – Year 1 Review”

This guide helps Lia practise the Year 1 number work at home. It explains each part in easy English, with things to say, questions to ask, and games to play.

The most important word in this guide is again. Counting and number facts become easy only with short, happy practice, many times.

979899100101102

Made by Lia's dad with the help of AI. It follows the Year 1 Number programme in the National Curriculum for England (place value, and addition and subtraction), which Lia's school follows. It is home practice, not official school material.

What Year 2 expects from Year 1

Five things from Year 1. This guide has one topic for each.

Year 1 goals: from the National Curriculum in England, mathematics programmes of study (Year 1). Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0.

Why is this important?

In Year 2, every lesson uses these skills. For example, adding 38 + 5 needs counting across 40, and bonds to 10. If these skills are quick and easy, Lia can think about the new idea, not the counting.

Lia probably knows the maths. Now she needs it in English.

Children in Korea learn numbers to 100 and adding within 20 in Grade 1. So the maths is probably not new for Lia. What may be new is doing it in English: counting out loud quickly in English, reading and spelling English number words, and understanding English questions.

So in this guide, speaking and listening are as important as writing. Count out loud together every day.

Lia should count in English smoothly, starting from any number, going up or down, and going past 100. The hard places are where the tens change: 29 → 30, 70 → 69, 99 → 100 → 101. After 100, British English says “one hundred and one”.

YOU 부모가 할 말LIA 아이가 할 만한 대답DO 손으로 할 일

Count together, then take turns

YOU“Let's count together from 45 to 55. Ready? Forty-five, forty-six…”
YOU“Now let's take turns. I say one number, you say the next. Fifty-eight.”
LIAFifty-nine.
YOU“Sixty.”
LIASixty-one.

The tricky tens

YOU“What comes after 39?”
LIAForty.
YOU“Yes. After a number that ends in 9, the tens change. What comes after 59? After 89?”
YOU“Now backwards. What comes before 70?”
LIASixty-nine.

Backwards is harder than forwards. Practise going back across a ten: 72, 71, 70, 69, 68.

Across 100

DOPoint to 97 on the 100 square.
YOU“Let's count: ninety-seven, ninety-eight, ninety-nine, one hundred…”
YOU“What comes after 100?”
LIAOne hundred and one.
YOU“Great! Let's count to 110. Then back to 95.”

Start anywhere

YOU“Start at 36. Count forwards. Stop at 44.”
YOU“Start at 83. Count backwards. Stop at 76.”
YOU“Can you start at 112 and count back to 98?”

One more, one less

YOU“What is one more than 49?”
LIA50.
YOU“What is one less than 80?”
LIA79.
YOU“Is one more the number after, or the number before?”
LIAAfter!
  • “What comes next?”
  • “What comes after 39?”
  • “What number is before 60?”
  • “What is one more than 99?”
  • “What is one less than 100?”
  • “Count on from 57.”
  • “Count back from 83.”
  • “Count up to 110.”
  • “Count down to 90.”
  • “What number is between 69 and 71?”
  • “Keep going!”
  • “What comes after 99? And after that?”

    Note

    100, then 101.

  • “Which is harder, forwards or backwards? Why?”

    Note

    Talking about learning helps.

  • “What happens to the tens digit after 39?”

    Note

It changes from 3 to 4.

  • “Is one more than 69 seventy or sixty-ten?”

    Note

A fun check of a common mistake.

  • When

    She says “twenty-ten” after 29.

Stop at 29. Show the 100 square: “After 29 we go to the next row. The next row starts with 30, thirty.”

  • When

    Backwards, she says 60, 69 or 60, 50.

Count forwards first (58, 59, 60), then backwards on the same numbers (60, 59, 58). Use the 100 square.

  • When

    She says “one hundred one”.

That is American English. At a British school we say “one hundred and one”. Both are understood.

  • When

She mixes up thirteen and thirty.

Say them slowly with the stress: thir-TEEN, THIR-ty. See Topic 4.

Game · Stop and go

You need: nothing

  1. You count out loud: “forty-one, forty-two, forty-three…” Then stop suddenly.
  2. Lia says the next three numbers.
  3. Swap. Sometimes stop just before a new ten (…68, 69) or just before 100.
Game · Spot Dad's mistake

You need: nothing

  1. You count, but make one mistake: “eighty-seven, eighty-eight, eighty-ten…”
  2. Lia shouts “Stop!” and says the right number.
  3. Children love catching adults. This is great for listening in English.
Game · Count and move

You need: space to move

  1. Count forwards and jump on every number. Count backwards and walk backwards.
  2. Or clap on every number that ends in 0 (30, 40, 50…).
  • Count backwards from 120 to 90.
  • Count on in 1s from any 3-digit number to 120, like 109 to 120.
  • One more and one less than 100: 101 and 99. Then 10 more and 10 less than 100: 110 and 90.

A 2-digit number has tens and ones. In 46, the 4 means 4 tens (40) and the 6 means 6 ones. Lia should read numbers out loud in English (46 → “forty-six”) and write numbers that she hears (“forty-six” → 46). A numeral is a number written in digits, like 46.

4 tens and 6 ones = 46

YOU“4 tens is forty. 6 ones is six. So the number is forty-six.”
YOU“Can you write it?”

Number dictation (very important!)

YOU“I will say a number. You write it. Ready? Seventy-three.”
DOLia writes 73.
YOU“Good! Now: fourteen. Now: forty.”

This is the best practice for listening. Include teen and ty numbers (14 and 40, 16 and 60) and numbers like 70 and 17.

DOWrite 58 on paper.
YOU“Can you read this number?”
LIAFifty-eight.
YOU“How many tens? How many ones?”

The 100 square

YOU“Put your finger on 34. What is under it?”
LIA44.
YOU“Going down is 10 more. What is above it?”
LIA24. Going up is 10 less.
  • “How many tens? How many ones?”
  • “What number is this?”
  • “Write the number I say.”
  • “Read this number out loud.”
  • “What is the tens digit?”
  • “What is the ones digit?”
  • “Which is bigger, 45 or 54?”
  • “Put these numbers in order.”
  • “Show me 62 with the Lego.”
  • “What does the 4 in 46 mean?”

    Note

4 tens, forty. Not just four.

  • “Are 45 and 54 the same? Why not?”

    Note

    Different tens and ones.

  • “Which is more, 38 or 83? How do you know?”

    Note

    Compare the tens first.

  • “How do you write seventy? Why is there a 0?”

    Note

    7 tens and 0 ones.

  • When

    She writes 407 for “forty-seven”.

Build it: 4 tens and 7 ones. “Forty is 4 tens. We write the 4 in the tens place, then the 7.”

  • When

    She writes 74 for “forty-seven”.

Say it slowly: “FOR-ty… se-ven. Which do you hear first? The tens.”

  • When

She writes 16 when you say 60.

This is a listening problem. Practise pairs: 16/60, 17/70, 18/80. See Topic 4.

  • When

She reads 29 as “two nine”.

“Say the tens name: twenty. Then the ones: nine. Twenty-nine.”

Game · Guess my number

You need: the 100 square

  1. Think of a number between 1 and 100. Lia asks questions: “Is it more than 50?” “Is it less than 70?”
  2. You answer only “yes” or “no”.
  3. She finds the number in the fewest questions. Swap roles.
  4. This practises the words more than and less than, too.
Game · Hidden numbers

You need: the 100 square and small sticky notes or coins

  1. Lia closes her eyes. You cover 5 numbers.
  2. She opens her eyes and says the hidden numbers: “This one is 57, because it is after 56.”
  • Make the biggest and smallest number with two digit cards (for example 3 and 8 → 83 and 38).
  • What is 10 more than 67? 10 less than 67?
  • Numbers after 100: build 105 (1 hundred, 0 tens, 5 ones).

Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s is counting in groups. It is faster than counting in 1s, and it is the start of the times tables (2×, 5×, 10× tables come in Year 2). Lia should say these counts smoothly, forwards and backwards, and use them to count real things: pairs of socks (2s), fingers on hands (5s), and 10 sen coins (10s).

  1. Grab a handful of 10 sen coins. Lia counts them in 10s: “10, 20, 30… 70 sen!”
  2. Take one away: “How much now?” (Count back in 10s.)
Game · Hand count

You need: family hands

  1. Everyone puts up both hands. Count the fingers in 5s.
  2. Hide one hand: “How many fingers now?”
Game · Pattern hop

You need: chalk or paper numbers on the floor

  1. Write 0–30 on the floor. Lia hops in 2s, then 5s, and says each number as she lands.
  • Count in 2s starting from 1: 1, 3, 5, 7… (odd numbers).
  • Count in 10s from 7: 7, 17, 27, 37… What changes and what stays the same?

Lia should know adding and subtracting facts within 20 quickly, and use clever ways, not only counting. Three ideas help a lot: doubles (7 + 7 = 14), bonds to 10 and 20 (13 + 7 = 20), and facts that go together (if 8 + 7 = 15, then 15 − 7 = 8). The = sign means “is the same as”, so 14 = 7 + 7 is correct too.

13 + 7 = 20: fill the second ten
double 7 = 14
  • Two ten frames and 20 counters
  • Two dice
  • Playing cards (Ace to 10)

Doubles

YOU“Show me 5 fingers on each hand. 5 + 5?”
LIA10.
YOU“That's a double. Double 6? Double 7? Double 8?”
LIA12, 14, 16.

Doubles to 10 + 10 should become instant. They help with near doubles: 7 + 8 = 7 + 7 + 1 = 15.

Bonds to 20

YOU“We know 3 + 7 = 10. So what is 13 + 7?”
LIA20.
YOU“How do you know?”
LIA13 is 10 and 3. 3 and 7 make 10. 10 and 10 make 20.

Facts that go together

YOU“If 8 + 7 = 15, what is 15 − 7?”
LIA8.
YOU“And 15 − 8?”
LIA7.
YOU“One fact gives us four facts!”

The = sign

YOU“Is 14 = 7 + 7 true or false?”
LIATrue.
YOU“Yes. The = sign means both sides are the same. The answer can be on the left or the right.”
  • “What is double 7?”
  • “What is 8 add 7?”
  • “What is 15 take away 7?”
  • “What do I add to 13 to make 20?”
  • “How many more to make 20?”
  • “What is 3 less than 12?”
  • “What is the total of 9 and 6?”
  • “Is it true or false?”
  • “What is the missing number?”
  • “How did you work it out?”

    Note

Listen for clever ways: doubles, make 10, facts that go together.

  • “Can you find a quicker way?”

    Note

    For 9 + 6: 9 + 1 + 5 = 15.

  • “If you know 6 + 6 = 12, what is 6 + 7?”

    Note

    Near double: 13.

  • “Is 20 − 0 = 0 true?”

    Note

False: taking away nothing leaves 20.

  • When

She counts on fingers for every fact.

That's OK at first. Then teach one strategy at a time: doubles first, then make 10.

  • When

She takes away the wrong way: 7 − 15.

“Start with the whole, the biggest number.”

  • When

She thinks = means “the answer comes next”.

    Show both: 7 + 7 = 14 and 14 = 7 + 7. Use a balance picture: both sides the same.

Fact families (Year 2 guide)

Game · Double trouble

You need: one dice

  1. Roll the dice. Say the double: roll 4 → “double 4 is 8”.
  2. Then say double plus one: “4 + 5 is 9”.
Game · Make 20 cards

You need: playing cards Ace to 10 (Ace = 1)

  1. Turn over two cards. Add them. Then say how many more to make 20: “8 + 5 = 13. 13 and 7 make 20.”
  2. If the total is over 10, subtract the smaller card from the total too: “13 − 5 = 8.”
Game · Dice facts race

You need: two dice, paper

  1. Roll two dice. Add them. Write the fact and one related fact: 5 + 6 = 11 and 11 − 6 = 5.
  2. How many can you write in 2 minutes?
  • Three numbers: 7 + 3 + 8 = 18 (make 10 first!).
  • Missing numbers both sides: 9 + ? = 20 − 4.
  • Facts with tens: if 7 + 8 = 15, then 70 + 80 = 150.
