The big idea핵심

A number bond to 10 is a pair of numbers that make 10: 0 and 10, 1 and 9, 2 and 8, 3 and 7, 4 and 6, 5 and 5. In Year 2, Lia should know these instantly, without counting. They are used again and again: in making 10 (Part 6), in bonds to 100 (Part 4), and in bigger adding later.

    Lia counts from 1 every time.

    That is fine at first. Then say: “Don't count the counters. Count the empty spaces.” Later: “Can you just know it?”

  • When

    She says 6 + 3 = 10.

    Use fingers: “Show me 6. Now 3 more. How many fingers?” Let her find the mistake herself.

  • When

    She forgets 0 + 10 and 10 + 0.

    Show a full ten frame. “How many empty spaces? 0. So 10 + 0 = 10.”

Game · Bond ping-pong

You need: nothing

  1. You say a number from 0 to 10: “Four!”
  2. Lia says the partner as fast as she can: “Six!”
  3. Then Lia says a number and you answer. Make a funny mistake sometimes. Can she catch you?
Game · Make 10 card game

You need: playing cards: Ace (=1) to 9, plus the 10s

  1. Put 12 cards face up.
  2. Take turns. Find two cards that make 10 (for example 3 and 7). Say the number sentence: “3 plus 7 equals 10.” Keep the pair.
  3. A 10 card can be taken alone: “10 plus 0 equals 10.”
  4. Add new cards. The player with the most pairs wins.

  • Three numbers that make 10: 2 + 3 + 5 = 10. How many can you find?
  • Bonds to 20: 7 + 13 = 20. “What do you notice? 7 + 3 = 10 and 7 + 13 = 20.”
