To order numbers, find the smallest and put it first. Then find the next one, and the next. Smallest first is ascending order. Greatest first is descending order.

Use the same rule as comparing: tens first, then ones.

Order towers

DOBuild three numbers with bricks: 23, 32 and 3.
YOU“Which is the smallest?”

Ascending and descending

YOU“Smallest first is called ascending. It goes up, like stairs.”
YOU“Greatest first is called descending. It goes down.”
YOU“Can you say 3, 23, 32 in descending order?”

Five numbers

DOWrite 61, 16, 66, 60 and 6 on cards.
YOU“First, sort them by tens. Which have 6 tens?”
LIA61, 66 and 60.
YOU“Now order those by ones. Then put the others in.”

Moving cards is easier than writing. Let Lia move them, then read the line aloud.

    Sort by tens first: “Which numbers have 1 ten? Which have 6 tens?”

    “Ascending goes up, like going up the stairs. Descending goes down.” Walk up and down a step.

You need: number cards, or toys with number labels

  1. Give Lia four or five numbers.
  2. Say “ascending” or “descending”. Lia lines them up as fast as she can.
  3. She reads the line aloud. Then she gives you numbers and you line them up.
